The month of Rajab is one of the four holy months of the Arabic Hijri year. This is a month of peace and security. Any kind of quarrel, war, and any bloody activities are prohibited in this month.

Rajab is the month that urges us to prepare for Ramadan. Allah says:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…” (9:36)

It is mentioned in the hadith that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to make this supplication from the time he saw the moon in the month of Rajab: “Allahumma Bariklana fi Rajaba Wa Sha’ban Wa Balligna Ramadan”

Meaning: “O Allah! Bless the months of Rajab and Shaban for us and grant us the grace to reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. extend our life till Ramadan).”

The month of Rajab occupies an important place in the history of Islam. Below are 5 such historical events that took place this month:

1) Isra and Miraj took place in Rajab month

The holy Miraj took place this month. Allah took His beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) on a journey from the holy city of Makkah to the Masjid Al-Aqsa and invited him to meet Him privately. Which was the best miracle revealed to the Muslims by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

2) 5 times prayer was made obligatory in this month

On the night of Miraj, Allah offered 5 prayers as a gift to His beloved Prophet (peace be upon him). And made it obligatory for his Ummah. Due to which the Muslim Ummah prays 5 times a day to gain nearness to Allah.

3) The last battle of the Prophet’s lifetime, ‘Tabuk’, took place in this month

The last battle in the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the Battle of Tabuk. Which took place in the month of Rajab 9 AH. It was one of the most powerful wars in the history of Islam. In this campaign, the Muslim forces won without a fight.

4) Masjid Al-Aqsa gained independence in Rajab month

Masjid Al-Aqsa gained independence in the month of Rajab. In the month of Rajab 583 AH, a battle took place with the Christian Crusaders under the leadership of the Muslim general Salahuddin Ayubi. So that the Muslim forces were victorious and liberated Masjid Al-Aqsa from the hands of the Christian Crusades.

5) The last Islamic caliphate came to an end this month

The last Islamic caliphate ended this month. 28th Rajab of 1342 AH marked the end of the Muslim caliphate. The last sultan of the caliphate, Abdul Majid II, left the caliphate and flew away. This day was a day of great shame and humiliation for the Muslim Ummah. From that day till now, the Muslim Ummah has not regained the lost caliphate.

May Rajab be a month of peace and security for all, a month of preparation for Ramadan. The Muslim Ummah should take the blessings of this month and accept the historical teachings and gifts and prepare themselves accordingly.
