629 Pakistani brides sold to China: Pakistani officials hesitant to end trafficking
Pakistani investigators have compiled a list of at least 629 Pakistani girls and women from across the country who were sold as brides to Chinese men and taken to China. Investigators are determined to break up trafficking networks taking advantage of the many poor and vulnerable in the country.
Since the list was put together in June, the investigators measures against the traffickers have slowed down. Officials close to the investigation say that it is largely due to the pressure from government officials fearful of hurting Pakistan’s lucrative business relationship with China.
On October, 31 Chinese nationals charged with trafficking were acquitted.
