Adultery and fornication: Two abominable sins in Islam
Adultery refers to those who have illegal sexual relations outside of marriage. And Fornication means to have a relationship with another man or woman after marriage. In Islam, fulfilling sexual needs in such an illegal way is completely forbidden (haram) and a punishable crime.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
“Man commits adultery through all his organs. Seeing a woman is the adultery of the eyes, talking to a woman is the adultery of the voice, listening to her with satisfaction is the adultery of the ear, touching her with the hand is the adultery of the hand, walking with her with illegal intent is the adultery of the foot. Thus, when all the means of adultery are fulfilled, the place of shame completes it or refrains from fulfilling it.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
The reason why adultery and fornication is forbidden
One of the great goals of Islam is to preserve the dignity, honor, and lineage of the people. This great purpose is thwarted by adultery. For this reason, adultery and fornication have been declared forbidden in Islam. This is one of the punishments for the humanitarian crimes that Islamic law has prescribed in the world. Adultery is a heinous crime about which the Almighty Allah says:
“Don’t go to the edge of adultery. Surely this is an indecent act and an evil way.” (17:32)
“Don’t go to the edge of obscenity; whether openly or secretly.” (6: 151)
Adultery is the worst of the obscene acts. By following the rules of the hijab (covering), keeping one’s eyes down, and forbidding solitude with one’s wife, Islam has created a barrier between the paths and the means of adultery.
The custody of the place of shame is the guarantee of paradise
For those who refrain from illegal sexual intercourse and guard their private parts against evil deeds, there is a guarantee of Paradise in the Hereafter. Allah identifies successful believers and says,
“Those who guard their private parts, but in the case of wives and handmaids, they are not to be blamed. So, if they desire someone else, they will be transgressors. And those who keep the deposit and the promise; and those who are extremely careful in their prayers. They will inherit Paradise, where they will live forever. ” (23: 5-11)
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever assures me about the thing between his two jaws (i.e. the tongue) and the thing between his legs (i.e. the place of shame), I will assure him of Paradise.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
Punishment for adultery in the world
Under Sharia law, adulterers will be flogged 100 times and expelled from society for one year. And in the case of flogging, this is the greatest punishment of Islamic law.
In the Quran, Allah says,
“Whip both adulterous men and adulterous women 100 times. When it comes to enforcing Allah’s law do not let your hearts be troubled. If you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of believers witness their punishment.” (24: 2)
Punishment of fornication in the world
If a married man commits illegal sexual intercourse, he must be stoned to death in public, according to Sharia law. And if both of them are married, then both of them will have to be stoned to death. So that, witnessing this punishment no one dares to do this heinous act again.
The afterlife punishment of the adulterer
A hadith describes the punishment of the adulterer in the Hereafter:
“The adulterer will be naked in a cave with a very narrow front and a wide bottom. A fire will burn beneath it, and they will be burned therein. They will occasionally come close to getting out of there; then the fire will surround them again. And this treatment with them will continue till the Day of Resurrection.” (Bukhari)
Punishment of the old adulterer
If a person who has reached old age commits adultery, his punishment will be more severe in the Hereafter.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Allah will not speak to three classes of people on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, nor will He look upon them with mercy. For them is a painful punishment. They are old adulterers, tyrant rulers, and arrogant poor.”
May Allah protect us from this heinous crime. Ameen.
