“And if you should count the favour of Allah, you could not enumerate them.” (Qur’an 14:34)
We read in the Holy Qur’an:
“And if you should count the favour of Allah, you could not enumerate them…” (Qur’an 14:34)
This reminds us that we could not count all the blessings Allah has granted us even if we tried to. When we praise Allah for all our blessings, there are still so many we overlook.
What should be our focus?
This makes us think about all the things we have in our life. Some blessings may come to mind more often, especially if it is a blessing that is spoken about often or is more obvious to us, such as regarding our homes or jobs. However, there are so many other blessings we have, such as the food and water we have, our health, and the support we receive from the people Allah has put in our lives. The moments of the day where we feel peace, or the moments we feel happy – all of these things are blessings Allah has granted us.
When we remind ourselves of the blessings that we often forget, it makes us realise that there are people who do not have what we have. Their struggles are a way for them to receive a great reward, for the patience they bear. In this Dunya, there will always be someone who has more worldly things than us, as well as someone who has less worldly things than us. Looking at those who have less helps us to be more grateful for what we have. Being focused on those who have more distracts us from the reality of this temporary life. Having more worldly things in this life indeed is a test, as these attachments can lead us away from the Deen and our reason for being in this world.
Abundance of Blessings
Allah is the Most Generous. Any good in our lives does not come from us or anyone else, it comes from Him. The above verse of the Qur’an reminds us of this. We also read in the Holy Qur’an:
And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register. (Qur’an 11:6)
May Allah makes us of those who are grateful and focused on the blessings that He has granted us. May He enable us to be patient in times of difficulty. Aameen. Indeed, Allah is Al-Hafeez (The Guardian).
