Asim Shahmalak, the Famous Muslim British Surgeon with a Heart of Gold
In Islam, human life is one of the most precious things you can ever think of. It is so valued and sacred that Almighty Allah (SWT) said of it in the Holy Qur’an saying in Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:32:
‘…whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption done in the land, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.’
Hence, you can see clearly from these verses that Islam places tremendous value on the lives of human beings. So, it is a character of a good Muslim to do everything possible to save as many lives as possible, just like Asim Shahmalak, the famous British Muslim surgeon who is the interesting focus of this article.
Being a doctor is one thing but being a Muslim doctor is another thing entirely. Born on the 2nd of April 1961 in Karachi, Pakistan, 59-year-old Asim Iqbal Shahmalak got his early medical education at the Sindh Medical College of the University of Karachi in Pakistan before he left for the Republic of Ireland as a general surgeon. By 1997, he already bagged his qualification as a specialist registrar in the area of general surgery. Before moving to the United Kingdom in 1996, he was already a member of the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.
While focused on his work as a general surgeon, he also did private practice as a hair transplant surgeon. As a surgeon, he has some impressive accomplishments to his name. For example, it was Shahmalak who came up with the first eyelash transplant in the United Kingdom in 2009. He was able to pull this off by making use of pioneering tactics in the field of hair replacement surgery and these proved revolutionary for those who have suffered facial burns. He also advanced techniques in eyebrow replacement surgery.
However, it is not just his work as a surgeon that made Shahmalak to be known all over the world. Islam is a faith that encourages us to do as many charitable activities and as a Muslim, that is precisely what Shamalak did. His activities in the field of charity are more than impressive, just as every Muslim is expected to do.
From 2013, this relentless Muslim surgeon has been on regular visits to his home nation of Pakistan. While there, he deploys all the skills that Allah (SWT) has given him to assist people who have suffered from acid attacks. It must be said that he does all of this while using his own money, time, and efforts. He has carried out several operations for victims of vicious brutal attacks and while doing this, he carries out the extremely complex operations to replace the eyelashes. Shahmalak is one of the few surgeons on earth to be able to do this. May Allah (SWT) give him more strength to keep doing more, aameen.
