Smartphones, cameras will be out to snap photos and create memories with our loved ones this festive season. Of course, we want to look good when the lens gets aimed our way. The right make-up application is key to looking good and maintaining that fresh look for long hours. Here are some make-up tips for you to look flawless in every photo throughout those many family gatherings.

You will be more successful in everything you do if you start with a plan. It’s just make-up after all, but a little planning goes a long way! Ask yourself, are you going for a bold or natural look? What make-up products should you avoid? Are highlighters needed? What colour lipstick would you want to wear, one that matches your outfit yet stands out in photos? Check off all the boxes before you get down to business.

Time and time again we’ve heard make-up experts stressing on the importance of skincare. Prep your base with your usual skincare routine and then apply a good moisturizer before applying the foundation and so on.

Primer is crucial, dear sisters. Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer is an incredible option as it illuminates the skin, fill up pores and creates a really smooth base for the skin. Another great option is Benefit’s Iconic Professional (pearl primer) Face Primer, as it minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines, helping make-up stay put for long. Apply an even layer of make-up primer all over the face and under the eyes.

Use foundation that gives full coverage, without making you look all cakey. Find ones that are photo-ready or high definition. Make Up Forever’s Ultra HD Foundation was specially designed for use in front of the camera. Another good option would be Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Foundation. It’s long-wearing and can last up to 15 hours. Choose your shade wisely! The key is to create a dewy, natural finish.

If you wish to contour, do so lightly. While heavy contouring looks great in photos, you must remember you are visiting houses and meeting many people so don’t freak them out by looking like a walking Instagram filtre. Keep it natural. By contouring softly, you can create shape that is very flattering in both photos and in real life. The goal is to not actually look contoured, but instead bring out the best in your face shape. Kat Von D has a really cool Shade + Light Contour Palette.

Sometimes using highly reflective make-up excessively can backfire in photos. Anything shiny and shimmering like highlighters, glittery products, lip gloss can bring great impact in a photo so use it sparingly. Use the highlighter to highlight parts you only want to stand it, and even so, do it gently. For example, if you want to apply shimmer on your eyelids, do it without covering the entire area.

A swirl of blush across the cheeks really helps one to look radiant and flushed in photos. This is one make-up items that makes you appear photogenic. Photos tend to wash out the colour in the face, so make sure you have just the right amount of colour showing. If you’re skin is a little on the tanned side, opt for blush with a slightly rich darker tone like pinky berry tones or a warm peach shade. Becca Cosmetics has a nice Mineral Blush which helps to naturally blush the cheeks. Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Blush (Powder) is a great option too, if you want enhanced definition and a healthy-looking glow. For the fair-skinned, opt for brighter tones like peach, coral and light pink to add a hint of blush.

Eyebrows, as they say, is what frames the face to give some love to them by shaping it properly. Besides that, eyelashes play a major role too in looking fresh in photos. If you’re not big on wearing fake lashes, get a good mascara to help you add volume and length to the lashes. Marc Jacobs’ O!Mega Lash Volumnizing Mascara is designed to not only boost the lash, but it helps to deep-condition the natural lashes too. IT Cosmetics also has its Elastic Stretch Volumnizing Mascara which is clinically shown to give your lashes super volume, super length and super elastic stretch.  Avoid going for the smoky eye look and instead choose a soft, natural look so incorporate a lot of nude and pink toned eye-shadows.

As Muslims we shoudn’t ignore our religious obligations just so we can look good. When we’re out and about with our make-up on, it’s best to bring a small bottle of make-up removers or you can use make-up remover in the form of wet tissues. Yes, you would want your make-up to last as long as possible, but you also need it to be easily removed before you perform the ablution (wudhu) in order to pray in between house visits and family gatherings.
