When we have free time, we should try to be productive. We could volunteer for different organisations who work to help and develop aspects of society but don’t necessarily possess the required funds to recruit enough helpers. There are many voluntary jobs available across the globe as organisations are in need of people who are willing to contribute their skills and time.

Some organisations may need help with tasks that can be done online from the comfort of your home, which is a good option if you would prefer to help without having to leave your house. Previously, there may have been volunteering opportunities that required you to travel to a site or office, which is good to do if you are able to help in that way, but the rise of technology has created other beneficial ways to help using online methods.

Charities around the world welcome people who want to help, and the opportunities are not limited. From assisting with website management, to going into the charity shop or office to assist, there any many roles to help with.

When we decide to make a voluntary contribution in this way, not only will our help be something which is valued, but we will also be adding to our current experience and skillset. There is something we can learn from every experience in life, and it will help us to widen our understanding and awareness. We know that there is purpose behind each experience willed for us by Allah. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.” (Qur’an 8:30)

The more experience we gain, the more value we can bring to new roles that we seek in the future. It also shows the passion we have to help other people, which is a highly sought-after quality when applying to jobs.

Making proper use of your time by helping others will also make yourself feel good. You will feel as though you have contributed to a good cause, and Allah is always aware of our efforts. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.” (Qur’an 57:4)

Through being productive with our time in this way, we will not be leaving as much time for us to dwell and overthink about worries and stresses. This is ideal because sometimes, free time unfortunately gives us the opportunity to worry and overthink. Instead of allowing that to constantly happen, we will be giving our time to something valuable that also helps our mindset.

We should also think about other ways we can use our free time to help others, such as assisting our family members and friends when they are in need. Sometimes, people just need to speak and have someone that will listen to them, and that is what they find peace in.
