With the increased popularity of internet use and the expansion of the online world, we can sometimes become overwhelmed by the range of opinions we come across. We can become affected by different views we see if we do not agree with them, or feel disappointed that people have views that seem immoral and unacceptable. We can also feel negative about our existing mindset if we find that many people think in another way.

In these situations, we must remind ourselves that the online world is like a place that has no limits or restrictions. People express their opinions and say whatever they want to with little care about the effect of their views on others. People may think that saying things online is something which has little effect as it is through a digital channel and not in person, so they do not need to worry about the impact of what they say.

We must remind ourselves that regardless of what we may come across online and the range of opinions we may see, whether we agree with them or not, we must be confident in our own individual views. We must allow ourselves to have our own opinions and not let our thoughts be directly influenced by what we come across online. People spend a great deal of time on the internet nowadays, whether for work, study or leisure. This is why it is more important than ever to ensure that we have a mindset that pushes us to think for ourselves rather than just follow others.

Following what we see online or just taking on an opinion we see online is risky as we have not put in our own thought. Whether the topic be about politics, morals, poverty, or the media – we must try our best to make sure our opinions and thoughts are formed by us seeking knowledge and staying informed. Through doing this, we will be on our way to ensuring that our opinions are not just there because we are following what we have seen someone else say or write online.

It is also important when we are using the internet to try to avoid comparing ourselves to others. This can be a dangerous thing to do as it can cause us to feel anxious or negative about ourselves, and overthink about things that we wouldn’t have otherwise been concerned about.

Constant updates about what other people are doing, saying, and how they are living their lives, inevitably causes people to start doubting themselves, even if this is completely unnecessary. This is why it is so important to be careful when exposing ourselves to the online world.

We read in a hadith that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.” (Tirmidhi)

We must keep in mind that this does not only apply to friends, but also to the people we allow ourselves to be surrounded by, whether online or in person. Whether we realise it or not, the things we expose ourselves to online and in real life, actually do affect us. This effect can either be positive or negative, so we must always be aware.
