Giving to Charity Actually Benefits Us
We may often think when we are giving to charity that we are helping people who are less fortunate than us. This is certainly true and we do hope that those people are benefiting from our donations, but we should also realise that giving to charity is actually beneficial for us too.
This may be something that we don’t realise easily, which can cause us not to be very motivated to give to charity, or even if we intend to give to charity, it may be something that is not at the top of our to-do list. We must remember that we read in a hadith that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“Allah said: Spend in charity, O son of Adam, and I will spend on you.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
When we create a habit of giving to charity, it gives our jobs a greater purpose. Normally, we may just see our jobs as means and merely a way of helping us to pay our bills. We may not be enjoying our jobs because may not have found the job that we were aiming for yet. Seeing our jobs as a way for us to help those who are less fortunate than us makes us change our whole mindset about working.
We begin to see our jobs and ways of earning as a route for us to help others, to change the lives of people who are suffering, and to make our contribution to those who are in poverty. When we wake up every morning ready to start work, we will not just think about the work itself. We will remember that we are not just working for ourselves, but we are working to help others – people who we do not even know, but we know that they are struggling.
Giving to charity also helps us to think more about the good we can do rather than worry about our hardships. As we shift our focus more to what we can do to help others, we will not be thinking so much about our stresses and becoming overwhelmed by them. Giving to charity creates another space for us in our lives to feel more content and at peace as we realise how blessed we are to be able to help others.
Getting into the habit of giving to charity also makes us realise that the wealth we have is a blessing. It is something that Allah has given us, so we should strive to be generous and not take our wealth for granted.
When we give to charity we think about the that fact that it is only through this wealth that our Lord has given, that we are able to financially help those who are less fortunate than us. We are able to contribute to improving their quality of life. We start to think about how we would feel if we were in poverty or a desperate situation. We would hope that people would help us too.
We must remember that we read in a hadith:
“Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter. Whoever alleviates [the situation of] one in dire straits who cannot repay his debt, Allah will alleviate his lot in both this world and in the Hereafter. Whoever conceals [the faults of] a Muslim, Allah will conceal [his faults] in this life and the Hereafter.” (Muslim)
