Hagia Sophia becomes a mosque
The Hagia Sophia Museum in Istanbul has been turned into a mosque after a court annulled its museum status.
Originally constructed as an Orthodox Christian cathedral in 537, it became a mosque under Ottoman rule and was turned into a museum in 1934, eventually becoming a UNESCO world heritage site.
Muslim prayers will be said there on the 24th July.
“Like all our mosques, the doors of Hagia Sophia will be wide open to locals and foreigners, Muslims and non-Muslims,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
