Settling back into school may be something that children are finding difficult, especially if their school has not been open for a very long time. There are a variety of ways in which we can help ourselves and our children in this period of time as they try to become more comfortable and familiar with school again.

It is important for us to remember that what works for one child will not necessarily work for another child. Some children, during their time away from school, may have had to cope with family members becoming unwell, or maybe they themselves were unwell. Other children may not have been able to spend time with their family members or those they live with, if they live with people who are key workers that were not able to stay at home with them. There are also other children who have had to stay at home and not be able to spend much time with their parents who were working from home.

As a result, each child will have their own experience of their time away from school, which could cause them to have very varied reactions on returning to school. Therefore, if we keep an open and accommodating mind when trying to help our children settle back into school, it will help us more.

As parents, guardians and carers, it is beneficial for us to keep in mind that we are not alone in the struggles we may be facing in sending our children back to school. It is a good idea to seek advice from those around us who could be in a similar situation in the community. In doing so, we can help other people too. We can share our experiences and tips that we learn with our family and friends to show our support.

It is also crucial for us to bear in mind that as much as we would hope for our children to return to learning and working hard in the way they did before, it is understandable why it may not be as simple as that for most children. The uncertainty of the global situation will have also had a detrimental impact on children’s education. Therefore, allowing children to have the time to ease themselves back into learning at school will be better for them, continuing to support them along the way.

May Allah make it easy for the children who are settling into school again. Aameen.
