How keeping a gratitude journal can help you

Islam Contributor

Keeping a gratitude journal helps us to feel more positive about ourselves and our lives. It makes us focus more on the things we do have rather than what we do not have. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]…” (Qur’an 14:7)

Making a note of things we are grateful for each day in a journal is a good way of keeping us aware of the blessings Allah has granted us. Sometimes, we may become too caught up in our busy lives that we may not notice how many blessings we actually have that many people do not have.

Benefits of gratitude journal

Another benefit of keeping a gratitude journal is that it helps us to increase our self-confidence. When we feel as though we are insecure about anything, writing down what we are grateful for will remind us and reassure us that we do not need to feel that way. It also helps us to reflect on our lives when we are alone and spend time in isolation, which is an important part of feeling more positive about ourselves. In this way, we do not become reliant on the opinions of others to define us. We are also reminded about the things we have achieved in life and the goals we reached by the will of Allah.

Writing a gratitude journal

Writing in a gratitude journal also help us to sleep more peacefully, especially when we write in them just before we go to sleep. We are not left with as many worries and stresses in our minds, and we go to sleep with a more reassured feeling. Stress can indeed prevent us from sleeping well, and it is commonly known how a lack of sleep can be detrimental to both our health and lives. We read in a hadith:

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, “I am told you fast and never break your fast and you never stop praying at night? Fast and break your fast, pray at night and sleep. Verily, your eyes have a right over you, your own self has a right over you, and your family has a right over you.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Happiness comes alive

Keeping a gratitude journal could also help us to be more appreciative of every good experience. For example, when we are given a gift or when we are spending quality time with our families, we will be more present in the experience, therefore enabling us to feel happier. Sometimes in life we experience joy, but we may not be able to embrace those moments fully if we become overwhelmed by negative emotions.

May Allah enable us to focus more on what we do have instead of what we do not have. Aameen.
