Learning about the death is good for your Imaan
Learning and reading about the concept of death helps us to raise our level of Imaan. It helps us to remember how short this life is, cope with our stresses, and make the most of the time we have by doing good. We read in the Holy Qur’an:
“[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.” (Qur’an 67:2)
As we read more about death in Islam, such as the procedure for burial and the prayers, we realise that in life we should really be more focused on building up our good deeds, more than anything else. We should be thinking about whether there are opportunities we are missing out on through which we can gain more rewards. We realise that there is always more we can do in the time Allah has blessed us with.
As we make ourselves more aware about the fact that death is not something we can expect to be at a particular time, because only Allah knows when the appointed time will be for everyone, we will feel more grateful. We will be grateful for each morning that we wake up, as we know that there are many who did not. There are many people that, on the same morning on which we woke up, returned to our Lord. They no longer have a chance to actively do something to help themselves. They have left this temporary world, just like all of us will one day.
Reading about death, and making ourselves aware of worldwide tragedies and disasters, make us remember how short this life really is.
We will believe more sincerely that we will not live here forever, and nothing we have here will last. However happy we are with our families, friends, careers, and hobbies, we will all lose these one day.
When we ensure that we are reading about and keeping aware of the concept of death in Islam, we become less heedless about our actions. It also helps us to disregard our stresses and worries, as the more we remind ourselves that we will leave this world one day, the less concerned we will be about the various issues we are facing in life. If we are facing problems in our family, have had a disagreement with our friends, or are struggling in the workplace, when we look at the bigger picture of this life, we will become less overwhelmed by all of this.
From developing our awareness of death, we will be more likely to try to use the time that Allah has blessed us with to do as much good as we can. We will try to think about how sincere we are in our worship, recite more Qur’an, and make it a priority to give to charity.
