How Muslims are Helping the Homeless in Britain
Food, clothing, and shelter are three of the most fundamental needs of humanity. But, we live in a world where there are a lot of challenges, not everyone can enjoy all these pressing needs for survival. According to Habitat for Humanity, as of 2015, there were around 150 million people globally who had no homes to live in and there were another 1.5 billion people whose shelters were described as being inadequate.
In an overwhelming number of countries in the world, homelessness is a major issue. But once again, Muslims are not surprised that we live in a world where there are many challenges and trials. It is not shocking to us as Muslims because Allah (SWT) in His infinite wisdom has created this planet in a way that there will be several challenges. It is very clearly outlined in the Holy Quran:
‘And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirim (the patient ones)’ – Al-Baqarah 2:155
As a result of the fact that Muslims are already aware of the nature of our existence here on earth, we are not caught by surprise which clearly influences the way we react to challenges. It is in line with this article of faith that Muslims in the United Kingdom are doing all they can to tackle the problem of homelessness.
The best part of this is that Muslims all over the country are involved in this act of charity. While some do whatever they can as individuals, others form groups, organizations, or associations to achieve these lofty goals. Talking of Muslim organizations assisting the homeless in Britain, the Muslim Charity organization is one that readily comes to mind. Registered as a charity in Wales and England, Muslim Charity has some of the most comprehensive strategies to tackle homelessness.
The charity organization employs several measures to assist those who are homeless. It has a plan that is dedicated to housing projects for the homeless. Then there is another plan that focuses on providing as many hot meals as possible for the homeless. In addition to these, there is another plan that focuses on clothing, which is specifically the provision of winter kits for people who are homeless. In a country like the United Kingdom where the winters can be very brutal, this is truly a noble move.
But as hinted earlier, Muslim Charity is not the only Islam-oriented charity organization that focuses on helping those without homes. There are also others like Muslim Hands which is known for its very effective Open Kitchen concept. With this concept, the organization can provide delicious and hot meals for the most vulnerable in society.
Many of these Muslim individuals and organizations have been appreciated and even awarded for their selfless humanitarian activities. However, as Muslims, they are not doing so for any material gain but for the sake of pleasing Almighty Allah (SWT). May Allah (SWT) accept their efforts as acts of ibadah (worship) and give them the best of rewards in this world and the Hereafter, aameen.
