How to be a true friend of Allah?

Allah created man for His worship. And people will worship Allah in order to attain nearness to Him. Being a Wali or close friend of Allah is the only desire of a prudent person. The friend of Allah is called ‘Wali’ in Arabic.

Two conditions to be a friend of Allah

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah states the identity of His beloved and the condition of being a friend in this way: “Know! Surely the friends of Allah have no fear, nor shall they be disappointed. (Allah’s friends are) those who believe and guard against the displeasure of Allah or follow the path of piety. There is good news for them in this life and in the Hereafter. Allah’s word never changes. That is the great attainment. (10: 62-64)

In the above verse, two conditions have been given for being a Wali or friend of Allah. One is to believe in Allah and the other is to protect oneself from the displeasure and disobedience of Allah or to follow the path of Taqwa (fear of Allah).

The identity of the Wali or friend of Allah is among the two virtues of Iman and Taqwa. Thus, the virtue of Iman and Taqwa will be as much and full as possible; the more he will be on the path of becoming a friend of Allah.

Imam Abu Jafar Tahabi said, “All believers are indeed friends of the Merciful Allah. But the more they are obedient to Allah and follow His commands, the more they are honored by Allah. That is, the friendship between him and Allah will be strengthened.”

The way to be a friend of Allah

The Prophet (peace be upon him) described two things to become closer friends of Allah. One is to observe the obligatory worship. Then engage yourself more and more in supererogatory worship.

The more one devotes himself to supererogatory worship after fulfilling obligatory worships, the more he will become a closer friend of Allah. It has been narrated in the hadith-

Narrated Anas Ibn Malik: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Allah says, “I declare war on those who are hostile to my friends. Of all the things a servant does to gain my closeness or to be a friend, I love the work that I have forced him to do. (That is, obligatory prayers are the first and foremost task to attain nearness to Allah)

Then the servant attains my love when he begins to move closer to me through regular supererogatory acts of worship.

And when I love him I become his ear, with which he hears. I become his sight, with which he sees. I become his hand, with which he grabs or hits something, and I become his leg, with which he walks.

If he wants anything from me in this situation, I must give it to him. If he seeks refuge in me, I will give him refuge.”

There is no other way to be a friend of Allah than to be a perfect believer and possess Taqwa. In order to be a friend of Allah, it is necessary to devote oneself to more and more supererogatory acts of worship in addition to following His obligatory rules and regulations. Which is clearly mentioned in the above hadith.

Who is the true friend of Allah?

Therefore, those who follow the Sunnah of His Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) in order to attain nearness to Allah, who have true faith and preserve it, and who attain Taqwa by abstaining from all forbidden and Haram deeds in the world, should fulfill all their duties. As well as performing more and more supererogatory acts of worship, they become the friends of Allah.

May Allah grant us the grace to perform the supererogatory acts of worship as well as to perform more and more supererogatory acts of worship by attaining nearness to Him, by steadfastness in faith and piety. Ameen.
