Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss is Back for Matrix 4
Amid the controversy over Spider-Man leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some happier news surfaced on the Internet – a fourth ‘Matrix’ film is officially a go!
What’s better, fans will get to see Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively and Lana Wachowski will return to write and direct the film.
The news was confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures exec Toby Emmerich with Variety on Tuesday.
“Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker- and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe,” said Emmerich.
Plot details for the upcoming film is unknown but according to Variety, sources say the film is set to begin production in early 2020.
Just a quick recap: ‘The Matrix’ is a sci-fi action film that depicts a dystopian future where humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality. Neo learns his reality is a program called The Matrix, created by artificial beings to distract humans while using their bodies as power sources. At the end of the film, he realizes he is ‘The One’ who will need to save humanity.
In ‘Matrix Reloaded’ which takes place six months after the events of ‘The Matrix’, Neo must decide how to save Trinity from a dark fate in his dreams. But Agent Smith makes his way out of the program, infecting the real world.
Meanwhile (spoiler alert), in ‘Matrix Revolutions, Neo sacrifices himself to destroy Smith and create peace between humans and robots. Trinity also dies in a hovercraft crash. It’s unclear how both Reeves and Moss will reprise their roles but it sure has fans at the edge of their seats about it.
Collectively, the Matrix trilogy which concluded in 2003 grossed $1.6 billion at the global box office.
