Knowing Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Why do we follow the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW)? When we say the name of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when we recite the Shahadah (declaration of faith), who is the person we are referring to? When we listen to the Adhaan (call to prayer) we, again, hear the name of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Have we dedicated time to learn about him?
It is so incredibly important for us, as Muslims, to know who he was. It is crucial for us to learn about his legacy, his care for us, his concern and love for us as his Ummah.
How do we not realise? How do we think that it is enough to simply say ‘peace be upon him’ after his name? Do we think that this shows enough appreciation for all that he has done for our Deen and for us as Muslims?
Surely not. Surely, we should be trying harder to learn about him. Surely, we often find the time to read about prominent, famous people of the modern day, but we do not put time into finding out about the person whom Allah described by saying:
“There has come to you a messenger from amongst you, he finds it difficult to bear your hardships. He is ever eager for you and to the believers he is kind and merciful.” (Quran 9:128)
Just knowing this should move us to tears out of appreciation and respect for our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW. So much care, so much love. For who? Us. Us – who search for this kind of care in other people but do not find it. Us – who seek approval in so many meaningless things in this world, and then wonder where we went wrong. We should really take a moment to understand this and let it sink in.
There are many times where we do not understand why we feel distant from our faith. Of course, if we don’t take the step to learn about our role model, how will we feel stronger in faith? Allah says:
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” (Qur’an 33:21)
The more we learn about the person that Allah created as our role model, the more we will understand our religion. We will feel more direction in our lives. Just purely accepting a person as your role model without learning anything about them doesn’t really give you much direction in terms of how to follow their path, let alone feel a great closeness, care and appreciation for them.
Learning about the character and qualities of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) will motivate us to follow his example as we should.
We should dedicate time to learn about his behaviour, his feelings in different situations, his personality and the way he would react to various trials in his lifetime. Understanding his journey as the final Messenger of Allah (SAW) is absolutely crucial for us to feel closeness to him, care for him, and consequently bring us closer to Allah (SWT).
