Suffering as a result of the effects of the coronavirus is widespread across the globe. We must make du’aa to Allah to help us all, especially those who are suffering the most.

Many people will be working from home at the moment and maintaining a good work-life balance during these times is extremely important. If we are used to working outside our own home – in an office, for instance – it is particularly important for us not to lose the balance in our lives. We read in the Holy Qur’an that Allah says:

“And He (Allah) enforced the balance. That you exceed not the bounds; but observe the balance strictly; and fall not short thereof.” (Qur’an 55:7-9)

We should try to remember to dedicate time for worshipping our Lord. Whether through Salah or through making du’aa, we must be sincere in our worship in order for us to feel peace and contentment in our hearts. In our du’aas, we should ask Allah to help us balance the many elements of our daily lives properly, as He is the One who is ultimately in charge of all things. This will help us to achieve a good work-life balance.

We must make an effort to remind ourselves to manage our time as best we can. For example, rising early and spending a suitable amount of time on each task we have to do will ensure we are not spending too much or too little time on anything. We must also make du’aa to Allah to put Barakah (blessings) in our time.

We ought to keep in mind how we are managing our thoughts. Through this, we will assist ourselves in having a more productive and balanced day. We should ensure we are not constantly occupying our minds with work during our leisure time, whereas that will be counterproductive and it will also be unhealthy for our minds, as we will not feel relaxed. We should try to develop a mindset in which are thinking of work only whilst we are working, rather than throughout the day.

We have to aim to renew our Niyyah (intention) as often as we can. When we remember that our intention is to please Allah, we will be motivated to have a good work-life balance as Islamically we are required to live a balanced life overall. From this simple act of renewing our intention, we will also be relieving ourselves of stressful thoughts. We read in a hadith that our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

“Verily, deeds are only with intentions. Verily, every person will have only what they intended. Whoever emigrated to Allah and his messenger, his emigration is for Allah and his messenger.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

We must not overlook the importance of reflection. Taking some time to reflect at the beginning of our day will help us feel more levelled and balanced, as well as develop our sense of perspective. By reflecting on ourselves and our connection with our Lord, we will be preparing ourselves to face the day in a way that avoids becoming so consumed by our daily tasks that we forget our Lord and our ultimate purpose in this world.
