No good deed is trivial

No good deed of ours will go to waste. Allah sees the good we do and it is something that will be beneficial for us both in this life and the next. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“Is the reward for good [anything] but good?” (Qur’an 55:60)

Therefore, we should not see any deed as too trivial to practise. For example, behaving kindly towards others will bring about good for ourselves. Sometimes we may find that we are not receiving kind behaviour in return, and we could become demotivated to continue maintaining our positive attitude. The above verse of the Holy Qur’an is indeed a reminder to us that Allah sees the good we do and Allah will settle justice when the deeds of every human are accounted for. We do not need to worry about the behaviour of others, as we will not be held accountable for what they do. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.” (Qur’an 17:15)

What is Our Reward?

Being reassured that goodness certainly does have a reward makes us more hopeful about the eternal life of the Hereafter. It makes us reflect and think about what a great blessing it would be to be rewarded with eternal goodness for the patience we bear in this life, showing kindness even when we do not receive it ourselves.

We are also reminded that indeed Allah is aware of everything in our lives. Reading in the Holy Qur’an that goodness is rewarded with good is a motivation for us to keep our focus on Allah and to behave in a way that pleases Him.

Intentions are Important

The verse also reassures us that it is always better to choose good actions regardless of what the outcome could be, as our intentions are so important. We strive to make our intention to please Allah more sincere. We also focus more on the outcome we will receive from our Creator, as opposed to the reaction we will receive from His creation.

May Allah enable us to cement in our minds and hearts that surely goodness is rewarded with good, and may that be a motivation for us to strive as believers. Aameen. Indeed, Allah is the Best of Helpers
