North Sumatra government clampdown on illegal gold miners: protecting World Heritage’s
North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi promises a crackdown on illegal gold mining activity in Mandailing Natal District, as they have harmed the surrounding environment and polluted the waters of the Batangadis River.
Ombilin, a former coal mining area in Sawahlunto, was listed by UNESCO as belonging to the World Heritage’s.
All mining activities in Sawahlunto could be detrimental to the environment and eventually trigger land claim conflicts. Therefore the mining activities must be halted completely in order to protect Sawahlunto’s image as a safe and nice tourist destination.
