Can you believe we’ve made it halfway through 2019 already? Time sure flies! If you’re looking for something new to do to break away from the daily routine slur this summer, and if you’re sick of scrolling through your Instagram feed all day, it’s time to pick up new hobbies. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, so spend it wisely. Here are some hobby suggestions for you to try.

There’s no greater satisfaction than being able to create or fix something on your own. If you’re into fashion, why not pick up sewing skills so you can customize your own clothes or alter them the way you want it to look? You wouldn’t lose anything if you know basic alteration skills. Also, if a garment can’t be amended or altered, it can be upcycled into something useful. Not only will this save you a lot of money, but you will also appreciate the amount of work and quality that has gone into making something.

Picking up a foreign language is a great way to enrich your social life. It also adds interest to your identity and enables you to speak confidently when travelling. Learning a new language also benefits you in such a way that it provides you with new stories and topics to talk about at social gatherings, and most of all, it enables you to gain a more profound understanding of other people’s cultures.

Why not volunteer on the weekend at the local soup kitchen or feed the homeless? Or volunteer to clean up the animal shelter for example? There are many great benefits to volunteering, one which can help to broaden your perspective. Plus, volunteering allows you to network with other people, provide a feeling of empowerment and more! Find an organisation that interests you and set up a time when you can help them with their mission.

If you’re struggling to find time to read, try listening to podcasts. You can most likely find a podcast on any topic imagined – seriously! Many pod-casters that explore areas of skills and hobbies or interests are usually very knowledgeable, so listening to them is a great way to learn more about your own interests and passion. The great thing about podcasts is that it delivers incredibly interesting content to your ears, so you can still multi-task while listening. You can listen to podcasts when you drive, cook or when taking a stroll. Check out podcasts on iTunes or Spotify.

If you’re itching to unleash your creative side, then it’s time to get crafty with DIY projects at home. It could be upcycling old furniture, or trying your hand at painting, or sprucing up your home decor. There are many ways to be nifty. Outdoor activities are a fun way to get in touch with nature, plus a lot of them don’t cost a cent! Take a long walk around the neighbourhood, or go for a bike ride (if you don’t know how to ride a bike, now is the perfect time to learn!), enjoy a picnic with the family at the park, or explore local hiking trails. It’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air to improve your overall well-being.

Take a break from playing games online and go back to the original board games! This hobby is a wonderful exercise for the brain for both kids and adults and the best part is that it brings laughter. It truly is a great way to bring people closer and is a great way to spend time with friends and family. There are many board game variations out there so just choose ones that you find interest in and set up game night. Have fun!
