Reading Surah al-Mulk before we sleep at night
We should all aim to develop the habit of reading Surah al-Mulk before we go to sleep at night. Doing so will help us to realign our focus in life, remind us of our purpose, and remember the Hereafter regularly. Reading the Surah will also help us to find peace and relax before going to sleep. We will feel calmer and less stressed about our daily lives.
We read in a hadith that reading Surah al-Mulk will protect us:
“It was narrated that Abdullah Ibn Masud said: Whoever reads Tabaarak allaahi bi yadihi’l-mulk [i.e., Surat al-Mulk] every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (SAW) we used to call it al-maani’ah (that which protects). In the Holy Qur’an it is a Surah which, whoever recites it every night has done very well.” (Al-Nasai)
We should also aim to read the translation of the Surah. Through doing so, we will be reminding ourselves of the power and might of Allah, relieving us of any feelings of despair and worry. As we cement in our minds and hearts that Allah has power over all things, we will rely and depend on Him sincerely. We read about Allah in the Surah:
“Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent.” (Qur’an 67:1)
Reading Surah al-Mulk followed by the translation at night before we sleep will also help us to keep in mind that there is a Hereafter and Allah did not create us to reside in this world eternally. We will think more about the Hereafter as we go about our tasks the next day, which will have a positive effect on our mindset.
We will not feel as attached to the different aspects of our lives – our jobs, our wealth, our friends – to the point where we feel lost without them. We will have a healthier understanding of our relationship with these things, as the Hereafter will be on our minds more often. Surah Mulk reminds us of the Hereafter and the reality of this temporary life.
For example, we read that Allah says in the Surah:
“[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.” (Qur’an 67:2)
By reading Surah al-Mulk and its meaning, we also help ourselves to realign our focus. Perhaps as we were going about our tasks throughout the day, we became distracted from our ultimate purpose. Dedicating a moment before we sleep at night to read this Surah will help us to remember why we are actually in this world. However busy our day was, whether or not we feel it was a good or bad day, we will be realigning our focus to what really matters.
Practising this habit of reading Surah al-Mulk before we sleep at night will help us to feel at peace, content, and relaxed.
