Islam teaches that expectant mothers will receive a huge reward for all that they endure. We read in the Holy Qur’an:

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” (Quran 31:14)

This shows how much respect mothers and parents are due from their children.

We also read in the Qur’an:

“And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, ‘My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.’” (Quran 46:15)

Those among us who are expectant mothers, or know of any, should be reminded that precaution should be taken to be protected from the envy of others. They should make du’aa for Allah to protect them, and not overly publicise their happiness or blessings, as we read in a hadith:

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Seek help in the fulfilment of your needs by being discrete, for everyone who is given a blessing will be envied.” (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir)

We also learn that in Islam, expectant mothers who die during labour are recorded as martyrs.

Jabir ibn ‘Atik reported:

“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘There are seven martyrs besides one who is killed in the way of Allah: the victim of plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of chest pain is a martyr, the one who dies of stomach infection is a martyr, the one who burns to death is a martyr, the one who is crushed under something is a martyr, and the pregnant woman who dies giving labour is a martyr.’” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

When Maryam (AS)’s mother was expecting, she would say a du’aa:

“[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of ‘Imran said, ‘My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.’” (Qur’an 3:35)

Therefore, the expectant mothers among us should also try to recite this du’aa regularly, sincerely hoping and intending to ensure the child becomes a righteous and obedient Muslim.

We learn from the hadith about when Allah sends an angel to write four things regarding the child:

Narrated `Abdullah bin Mus’ud: Allah’s Messenger (SAW), the true and truly inspired said, “(The matter of the Creation of) a human being is put together in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature’s) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him…” (Sahih Bukhari)

May Allah abundantly reward our mothers, fathers, guardians, and carers. May He grant them Jannatul-Firdaus. Aameen. Indeed, Allah is Al-Kareem (The Most Generous).
