Russia to ease lockdowns on regional basis
Russian officials have said that some regions may be able to ease lockdown restrictions imposed to curtail the spread of covid-19. Some tourist resorts may be reopened.
The borders remain closed. Schools are shut as well as most non-essential shops. Russians have been urged not to travel on holiday over the course of the summer.
“It’s better and safer to spend the holidays in your own country,” said Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin who has recently returned to work after being hospitalised with the virus.
Russia has had among the largest number of coronavirus cases in the world, currently third after the US and Brazil. 8,946 new cases brought the total tally to 353,427. The death toll currently stands at 3,633.
Anna Popova, head of Russia’s consumer health regulator, stated that just over half of Russia’s regions are in a position where the lockdowns may be eased without excessive damage to public health. People can safely be allowed to leave their homes for walks and some non-essential stores could be permitted to reopen.
