There are various reasons why we work. It could be because we have, to in order to provide for ourselves or our families. Or simply because we enjoy a particular line of work. Whatever the reason, all of us experience struggles at work at some point. This may range from a small detail irritating us each day at work, to the most difficult hardship we have ever been through.

In situations like these we must strive to remind ourselves of our Creator and that He is aware of everything we are going through. We should try to look at the hardship at work for what it means for our Imaan (faith) and try to look at the bigger picture. In the test of this life, how will we react to the difficulties that we are faced with?

When the work that we do in order to earn a living makes us feel stressed, it can be hard for us to stay strong and be positive. We must remind ourselves that Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“No calamity befalls anyone except by Allah’s Will. And whoever has faith in Allah, He will rightly guide their hearts through adversity. And Allah has perfect knowledge of all things.” (Qur’an 64:11)

The difficulties we face at work are decreed by Allah. If we have faith in Him, He will guide us through our struggles. We should depend and rely completely on Him. He tells us in this verse that He will guide our hearts. This tells us that the state of our hearts and our connection to our Lord is always the most important thing in this life, whether we are going through a positive or negative time period.

Before we head out of the home in the morning, we must remind ourselves that Allah had already decreed the things that will happen to us there. Whether we have had a complicated meeting or we are struggling to get the particular promotion we desire, only Allah knows what will be best for us.

If we struggle when dealing with a colleague or manager at work, we should remember that Allah said we will be tested through people. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“We have made some of you a trial for others. Will you not then be patient? And your Lord is All-Seeing.” (Qur’an 25: 20)

In this verse, our Lord tells us that we are supposed to be patient. When we have a colleague who behaves negatively towards us or they just don’t seem to get along with us, we must be patient. We must remember that Allah is All-Seeing. Most importantly, we should keep in mind that our patience will not go unnoticed. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.” (Qur’an 39:10)
