Setting Smaller Milestones to Help Us Achieve Our Goals
Setting smaller milestones is a good way of tackling aims or goals we have that may sometimes feel difficult to achieve. It helps us to break down our tasks so that we do not become overwhelmed by the overall task. It is up to us to take steps in order for us to be successful in our tasks and be productive in the time that Allah has blessed us with. We read in the Holy Qur’an:
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Qur’an 13:11)
Setting smaller milestones motivates us to work on the task as the overall goal seems more achievable. When we try to face the overall goal with breaking it down into steps, it can cause us to become overwhelmed. The method of setting smaller milestones can help us when we have an essay to write, a presentation to prepare for work, or even if we have a time-consuming and difficult household task to do.
If we are trying to grow in our careers, we should allow ourselves to gradually develop. When we attain the job we want, we will have learnt many skills in the jobs that preceded it. We will understand how important each experience was.
Dividing a goal into smaller and more achievable chunks motivates us to actually start working on the goal. As we work on our goal – one section at a time – we will become closer and closer to reaching completion. Perhaps we could decide to complete a small task in the morning and another in afternoon, just so we do not become overwhelmed. In doing so, we do not see the overall aim as overwhelming and difficult to achieve.
Our religion teaches us to value time. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said in a hadith:
“Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth, before you become old; and your health, before you fall sick; and your richness, before you become poor; and your free time before you become busy; and your life, before your death.” (Tirmidhi)
We should not waste the time that Allah has blessed us with and we should strive be productive. Setting smaller milestones for our goals will help us with this because it is a way in which we can divide our time to ensure we are using it properly and being productive.
We should refrain from developing bad habits. Sometimes when we have a time-consuming or difficult task at hand, we try to avoid acknowledging the urgency of the task because we find it overwhelming to even think about the task. Delaying the task and leaving it to the last minute will not only cause ourselves stress, but we will also not realise the amount of time that has gone to waste in the time that we did not work on the task.
