Charity: Sponsoring a widow or an orphan
The highest rewarding deed for a Muslim is to give charity. It is a true act of compassion and a Sunnah in Islam. The act of giving is highly regarded in Islam and was endorsed deeply by our beloved Holy Prophet (SAW).
The Holy Prophet (SAW) esteemed those who took it upon themselves to give care to orphans and widows. He mentioned that such a person will find a place in heaven (Al-Bukhari). He himself was an orphan and Allah (SWT) chose him to bring about the greatest of changes in society that the world had ever seen. Therefore, instead of idly watching these children suffer in silence, we as a community need to care for them.
Sponsoring a widow or an orphan are some of the best ways we can perform charity. Helping the weak of our society bears the highest of rewards. Muslims should protect one another. Therefore whenever we come across orphans or widows, we should try and help them. The Quran says: “And they feed, for the love of Allah, the poor, the orphan, and the captive…” (Surah al-Insaan, 8)
Losing loved ones at any age can be a traumatic experience for any individual. Thousands of orphans are residing in orphanages around the globe. These people are left alone, hungry and homeless.
Sponsoring means that you essentially provide them with all the basic needs and tools to help them stand up on their feet. There are many ways one can sponsor widows and orphans such as providing them with food, education and even helping them set up a way to earn for themselves.
As opposed to other religions, Islam promotes equality. Islam negates the concept of superiority by offering a system through which every Muslim can become an equal contributor to the society. Muslims must assist and facilitate the lives of orphans and widows to ensure at least that they live in a minimum of state of good health.
Many orphaned children are exploited for cheap labor and their inheritance is taken over. Along with that, widows are ridiculed and locked into their homes. Sponsoring them permits us to help them out emotionally and financially. It spreads a positive message and allows them to escape the harsh words of the society, thereby proceeding with a less encumbering life.
Forced labor is also quite a common means of exploiting widows and orphans, a phenomenon in act across the world on a daily bases. Believers can help them escape such forms of modern enslavement by paying off their debts, releasing them from the cycle of perpetual debt and slave work.
The Holy Prophet (SAW) said, “I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like these two” – and he gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them apart. (Al-Bukhaari, 5304).
Islam is wholesome in every way possible. It has a way of providing for the poor and the for the rich. It is a complete system through which everybody can benefit and you can participate in it without accumulating extensive wealth.
