Suspected discovery of stolen 1917 Klimt painting inside gallery wall
A 1917 painting by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt that was stolen in 1997 may possibly have been discovered, hidden in a wall of the Italian gallery where it was removed from, officials stated on Dec. 11.
Workers found the painting in a plastic rubbish bag behind a small trap door they came across whilst clearing ivy off the outer wall of the Ricci Oddi gallery, in the Italian city of Piacenza.
“This is incredible,” Jonathan Papamarengh, head of culture in Piacenza town council, told Capital Radio.
Police took charge of the discovery and experts will now examine it to verify its authenticity.
