In Islam, nothing is more important to us than Almighty Allah (SAW) for He is our Creator and the Ultimate Ruler of the Universe and all that exists. For Muslims, the most glorious names are the 99 names of Allah, also known as Asma Allah Al Husna. As the Almighty and the Lord of All, a Muslim needs to familiarize himself or herself with the names of the Lord. In doing so, a Muslim is going to have more love, hope, fear, and belief in Allah (SWT). Always remembering the name means the believer will carry out actions with sincerity.

Whenever a Muslim is deep in the knowledge of everything relating to Allah (SWT), the person is only doing what Allah (SWT) has created the person for in the first instance. We should remember that as Muslims, Allah (SWT) created us for His worship and remembrance only. Our task on this planet is not for any other thing but the worship and exaltation of our Creator. A true Muslim has to put in effort into learning these special 99 names. The more the knowledge we have of these names, the higher our level of faith in the mercies of the Lord.

Regarding these 99 names of the Almighty, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) admonished us when he said:

‘Allah has 99 names. Whoever memorizes and embraces these qualities will enter heaven.’ (Sahih Bukhari).

Even the Holy Quran made this also very clear and in Surah al-Araf, verse 180, Allah (SWT) stated:

‘The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on Him by them, but shun such men as use profanity in His names: for what they do, they will soon be requited.’

From this verse, it is clear that we must make the correct use of these names and we must not apply the same attributes to any other than Allah (SWT). Knowing these names is also another way by which we can call upon the Creator and have our prayers answered. So, apart from familiarizing ourselves with these names or even memorizing them, it is also a way for us to have our prayers facilitated.

There are so many benefits for us as Muslims regarding these names. We can do recitations of these names daily when asking for blessings, long life, protection, comfort, excellent health, and other good things in this life and the Hereafter. Also as each of the names comes with its meaning, the names can be invoked for particular blessings. For example, one of the 99 names is As-Sabur meaning the Patient One. Such a name can be added during our recitations and prayers when beseeching the Lord for patience.

Now that the importance of the 99 names of Allah (SWT) has been established beyond any doubt, it is clear that all Muslims should strive to use these names daily as such a practice will work in our favor. May Allah (SWT) ease the affairs of every one of us, aameen.
