The Lion King Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide
Hakuna matata! The Lion King definitely felt all the love having earned a billion dollar at the worldwide box office, achieving the grand milestone in just 19 days since its release.
A majority of the billion-dollar hailed from international markets with a total of $638.5 million while the remaining was earned domestically in the United States at about $360.9 million as of Tuesday.
Disney has been on a roll this year as The Lion King is the fourth Disney-released film to cross the billion-dollar mark. The movie follows the footsteps of films such as Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Aladdin.
It looks like Disney’s trend of producing live-action remakes of classic properties is indeed working due to the back to back success. Even though the release was met with mixed reviews from movie critics, it looks like Disney has no worries, for the rest of their days.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the hyper-realistic remake of The Lion King boasts a starry voice cast which features Beyonce as Nala, Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones reprised his role as Mufasa from the original animated film, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar and Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa respectively.
While Disney is soaking in all that success, fans can expect more releases in the coming months such as Frozen 2, a Maleficent sequel and Star Wars:The Rise of Skywalker.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Disney hits sets another new record by the time January rolls out!
