Allah has described successful people in various verses of the Holy Qur’an. He gives instructions that can make a person truly successful.

To believe

‘Who believes in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what we have provided for them, and who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter, they are certain [in faith]. Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.’ (Surat al-Baqarah [verse 3-5])

Following the Prophet (SAW)

‘Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him – it is those who will be the successful.’ (Surat al-A’raf [verse 157])

Prayers and a firm belief in the Hereafter

‘These are verses of the wise Book. As guidance and mercy for the doers of good. Who establish prayer and give zakah, and they, of the Hereafter, are certain [in faith]. Those are on [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.’ ( Surat  Luqman [verse 2-5])

The caller to the path of God

‘And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoying what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.’ (Surah Ali ‘Imran [verse 104])

Those who respond to that call are also successful. ‘The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, “We hear and we obey.” And those are the successful.’ ( Surat  An-Nur [verse 51])

More good work

‘And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy – it is they who will be the successful.’ (Surat al-A’raf [verse 8])

In another verse it is said, ‘And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] – it is they who are the successful.’ (Surat al-Mu’minun [verse 102])

Fighters for peace

‘They will fight in the way of Allah for the establishment of world peace, Allah has declared them successful. ‘But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good, and it is those who are the successful.’ (Surat at-Tawbah [verse 88])

Those who realize the rights of the people

Allah will grant success to those who respect the rights of their relatives, neighbors, and the poor travelers. ‘So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah, and it is they who will be the successful.’ (Surat Ar-Rum [verse 38])

Those who prefer the love of Allah and His Messenger

‘You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those – He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him. And we will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him – those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah – they are the successful.’ (Surat al-Mujadila [verse 22])

Those who prefer other believers to themselves

‘And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful.’ (Surat al-Hashr [verse 9]

May Allah Almighty grant us the tawfiq to act. Amen
