Tawakkul is trust and reliance in Allah alone. As Muslims, we constantly strive to have complete Tawakkul, no matter what the hardship is that we are going through. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Whoever places his trust in Allah, He is Sufficient for him and Allah will surely accomplish His Purpose: For verily, Allah has appointed for all things a due proportion.” (Qur’an 65:3)

We draw from this verse the importance for us to have Tawakkul. We learn that even in situations when we have nothing, we shouldn’t lose faith and remember that our Lord will help us even in the most unexpected of times and places. Allah tells us that if we place our trust in Him, He will be sufficient for us.

Furthermore, Tawakkul is necessary to have as believers. It isn’t simply an extra deed for which we can reap our rewarded – it is something we must have. Allah tells us in the Holy Qur’an:

“…And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed.” (Qur’an 5:23)

This means that, as believers, we shouldn’t question the ways of our Lord. There may be times when we feel that we have no one, or it feels like there is no way out. In those situations, we must remind ourselves to put our complete trust and reliance in our Lord. We must understand that He is the only One who has control over everything, so we can depend only on Him.

Whenever we struggle to have faith, we should remind ourselves that Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than it can bear.” (Qur’an 2:286)

We must thus remind ourselves that our Lord only sets us obstacles and tasks in proportion to what we are able to overcome and do. As our Creator, Allah knows exactly how much we are able to endure. He knows us more than we know ourselves, therefore, we must trust Him with whatever difficulty he prescribes into our lives.

Likewise, we should also that in any situations in which we have to put in extra effort to maintain faith, Allah is testing us. Everything we go through in this life is a test. So, if we have patience and make du’aa to Allah for him to help us be successful in each one of these tests, this will be better for us in this life and in the Aakhirah (Hereafter). Our Lord tells us in the Holy Qur’an:

“He [Allah] Who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed.” (Qur’an 67:2)

Therefore, we should strive to have complete trust and reliance in Allah, reminding ourselves constantly that this life is a test and Allah can see everything that we are going through.
