Why Dawah is Important in Islam and Who Should Do It
Islam makes life interesting and makes every minute of our stay on earth count. As a Muslim, dawah is one of the most important things you can do. This piece is going to focus on the importance of dawah in Islam and who should be engaged in it. Dawah in Islam simply means the concept of calling or inviting others to the beautiful path of Islam. This is not an invention but a direct commandment from Almighty Allah (SWT) who said thus in the Qur’an:
Who is better in speech than the one who calls to Allah, does righteous deeds and says indeed I am among the Muslims. – (Surah 41:33).
Almighty Allah (SWT) said further:
Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good preaching. – (Surah 16:125).
Let there arise among you a group inviting to all that is good, enjoining righteousness and forbidding evil. Those are the successful ones. – (Surah 3:104).
So as you can see, dawah is very important, so important that Allah (SWT) stressed upon it several times in the Holy Book. Countless hadiths focus on the importance of dawah in Islam and that explains why the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) did it all through his lifetime. Following his demise, the companions (sahabah) continued the tradition and it has not stopped till today. In the 21st century, there are Muslim missionaries doing dawah all over the planet and they are having a real impact on the lives of so many people.
The most important thing about dawah is not just about spreading the good news of Islam but showing the beauty of the faith while doing so. This explains why gentleness, kindness, compassion, wisdom, and empathy are the methods recommended for doing dawah in Islam. What that implies is that as long as you are a mature Muslim, you are qualified to do dawah.
The interesting thing about dawah is that you can always do it according to your capabilities. For example, you do not have to travel to distant countries before you can preach to non-Muslims about Islam. You can start right from your locality and it is not difficult. You can even do dawah without saying a word. Remember that actions speak louder than words. When others see the beauty of Islam in your character, attitude, and behavior, they become attracted. You should be an exemplary human being as that is dawah on its own.
Alhamdulilah, Muslims of today have taken dawah with every sense of seriousness. Countless dawah organizations are sponsoring and coordinating many dawah missions and activities all over the globe. They are very active and vibrant and they do their work following the rulings laid down by Allah (SWT) in the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the hadiths. As a result of dawah, millions of non-Muslims over time have come to accept Islam. But even at that, the job of dawah will not stop until the end of time. May Almighty Allah (SWT) bless the relentless efforts of Muslims engaged in dawah, aameen.
